Why Raksha Bandhan is Celebrated?
Raksha Bandhan is celebrated for the unbreakable bond of brothers and sisters. The word ‘Raksha Bandhan’ means the bond of protection. On this day, sisters tie colorful rakhi on their brother’s wrists. The Rakhi is the symbol of love, care, and well-being for their brothers. In return for that, brothers take a vow of protecting their sisters in every walk of life.
On this day, brothers and sisters celebrate the festival by exchanging gifts with each other. Also by spending time with each other. Cook delicious Indian dishes and eat together. The day is full of love, care, and harmony.
History of Raksha Bandhan (रक्षाबंधन)
The roots of Raksha Bandhan are rooted in the ancient mythological stories of King Hiranyakashyap and his son Prahlad. King Hiranyakashyap was an asura (demon) king. He was a cruel king, who does not believe in god. On the contrary, his son Prahlad was a true disciple of Lord Vishnu. From a very young age, Prahlad started following Lord Vishnu, which his father did not like at all.
Hiranyakashyap believed himself as the god. As Prahlad was growing up, he became a true disciple of Lord Vishnu. He used to meditate day and night just by reciting Lord Vishnu’s name. His father tried to disturb his tapasya many times. In the end, King Hiranyakashyap ordered his sister Holika, who was immune to fire, to murder Prahlad.
Holika convinced Prahlad to sit on a heap of wood on fire. But the flames spared Prahlad but not Holika. Prahlad was untouched by the flames. He was saved by Lord Vishnu. In the end, Lord Vishnu took an avatar of Narasimha, a half-lion, and half-human, and killed King Hiranyakashyap and freed the society from his demons.
Importance of Raksha Bandhan Festival
Apart from the mythological stories, Raksha Bandhan has significant importance in society.
