Droupadi Murmu Early Life and Education

She was born on June 20, 1958 (age 65 years) into a Tribal Community known as Santali in Uparbeda village located in the Baidaposi region of Rairangpur, Odisha. Her father was Biranchi Narayan Tudu who earned his livelihood through farming. Father and grandfather held crucial positions as Sarpanch within the village of Gram Panchayat. Her mother was a housewife. Formerly she was named Put Tudu by her family but she underwent several name changes her school teacher eventually renamed her to Draupadi.

In her early years, she pursued her primary education at the local primary school in Upar Beda village of Kusumi Tehsil. Then, she moved to Bhubaneswar for higher secondary education at Girl’s High School. She obtained a B.A. degree from Rama Devi Women’s College, a state university in Bhubaneswar for women.

In her past life, before coming into politics, she worked as a clerk until 1983. Earlier, In 1980, she tied the knot with Shyam Charan Murmu who was a banker and then together they welcomed two sons and a daughter. She also worked as a teacher in Rairangpur until 1997. Then she started her political career. Very unfortunately and tragically over a time span of seven years, that is from 2009 to 2015, she experienced the saddening loss of her husband, two sons, mother, and her brother. Amidst these trials, she became a follower of Brahma Kumari’s spiritual movement. She has been an admirer of Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister.

Political Career of Draupadi Murmu

Beginning in 1997, she emerged as the elected councilor of the Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat where she secured her position as an independent candidate in a seat reserved for women. Consequently, she became a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Her political journey began with being a winner in the 2000 Odisha Legislative elections from the Rairangpur Assembly constituency and served for two terms, spanning from 2000 to 2009. For nearly a decade, she served as a member of the Odisha Legislative Assembly. Murmu played a pivotal during the government of Naveen Patnaik in the Ministry of Commerce and Transport. Also, during the BJP and BJD coalition in Odisha, she occupied the portfolio of Minister of State ( as Independent Charge) for Commerce and Transportation. Her responsibilities also extended to the Fisheries and Animal Resources Development department from August 6, 2002, to May 16, 2004.

Then the year 2013 also marked another milestone moment as she got elected to the BJP National Executive (ST Morcha). There she held the position of district president until 2015.

A remarkable journey began when she was sworn in as the first woman governor of Jharkhand from 18th May 2015 to 12th July 2021.

Political Career as President of India

BJP nominated Murmu as a National Democratic Alliance (NDA) presidential candidate in 2022. In the opposition party, the candidate was Yashwant Sinha. She has undertaken many visits to different states during the election campaign. She made a remarkable clear victory on 21st July 2022 and secured 676,803 electoral votes (almost 65%). The victory marked her assumption of the honorable role of the 15th President of India, the highest office. She took the oath which was administered by our 48th Chief Justice of India, N. V. Ramana, in the presence of former presidents, the prime minister, and other esteemed members. She was the first President belonging to a tribal community and also the youngest president & first President born in independent India. She is our second 15th woman president after Pratibha Patil as the 12th president.

A controversy arose recently in May 2023 when the New Parliament House, a project under the Central Vista initiative, was inaugurated by Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India. Opposition parties boycotted the ceremony and demanded that the inauguration should be carried out by Murmu as she was the constitutional head. But Murmu later expressed her pride and deep honor with the inauguration being held by Prime Minister Modi.
